Growing up in a small town in Texas in the mid-1960s, my world had boundaries — spoken and unspoken ones. There were rules about how you dressed, how you carried yourself, and what was considered "appropriate." Then, at 22 years old, I stepped into Las Vegas, Nevada, and everything I thought I knew about self-expression was turned upside down.
Las Vegas in that era was electric. This was the height of "What happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas" — and everything was happening. The fashion alone was a revelation. You'd see someone in a floor-length formal gown standing next to someone in the most daring, barely-there outfit imaginable, and nobody batted an eye. In fact, they were celebrated. People were bold, unapologetic, and completely themselves — and the city loved them for it.
Back home in my neighborhood, people were still praying about what I witnessed in Vegas. But I saw something different. I saw freedom.
I saw people who weren't dressing for approval. They weren't performing for the majority or shrinking themselves to fit someone else's comfort zone. They were simply, beautifully, authentically themselves — and they were admired for it.
That moment never left me.
